Andy’s 7th birthday party

The boys were out of school yesterday and today for the German holiday, Christi Himmelfahrt known in English as Ascension Day.   It is celebrated on the 40th day after Easter Monday.  The name comes from the New Testament, where it is described how Jesus ascended to heaven having shown himself to his apostles 40 days after the resurrection.  The Germans also celebrate Vatertag – Father’s Day on this day.

With a break in the regular shuttling of the boys here and there, I had some time to go through the photos we took at Andy’s birthday party last weekend.  Andy invited 6 friends from school, nine boys in total makes for a rambunctious group!  We played games, ate yummy food and celebrated our Andy.  He received lovely gifts and thanked everyone with a hug.  This sweet boy of ours is all heart and soul.

Thanks to everyone who sent gifts and birthday wishes.  You helped make his day extra special and we truly appreciate your thoughtfulness.

I hope you enjoy this short slideshow I put together to share with you.

this moment :: 31 may

A Friday ritual. A single photo – no words – capturing a moment from the week. A simple, special, extraordinary moment. A moment I want to pause, savor and remember.

weihnachtsmarkt :: bernkastel-kues

The first Christmas market of the season opened on 26 November in Bernkastel-Kues. This quaint little town is nestled on the Mosel River with picturesque historical half-timbered houses, narrow cobbled stone streets and romantic corners.

We first visited Bernkastel Kues this summer while touring the Mosel River with the “Chicago Etchells”.
This time we were lucky enough to be accompanied by a great family visiting us from Southern Germany.

If you find yourself in the area (54470 Bernkastel-Kues), the market is open:

24 Nov – 23 Dec 2012

Monday – Thursday 11:00 – 19:00,
Friday & Saturday 11:00 – 21:00, Sunday 11:00 – 20:00

Love to all,

play date :: Meta

Meta and Alex are in the same class at the International Deutsche Schule of Brussels (the German School).  Both Alex and Meta would speak fondly of one another at home.  We started having play dates with Meta a few months ago as one day Meta’s Mom, Katharina, invited us to their house for the first time.  I brought Andrew along too and he enjoyed playing with Meta’s little sister Freya. Today was the first time that Meta stayed without Mom and they both children did wonderfully.  We are so glad she spent the afternoon with us. Meta’s family is moving to Scotland in a few weeks and we will surely miss our play dates with them.

Meta & Alex

Playdoh is a hit for any play date.

Andy joined in the fun.

I must admit, I have come to look forward to play dates.  To see Alex in his play glory with his friend and to share in some mom talk with my new friend.  It continues to amaze me how children remind us of the important things in life.

Did you have a favorite play date friend growing up? Tell us about it!

Love to all,
